Today we held our first themed WAB event in Fort Morgan, Colorado. The theme was the Age of Arthur. Eleven gamers participated.

For the first time out, we felt that a full WAB weekend event like one sees in Nottingham was a little too ambitious. So we opted for a one day format consisting of three rounds.

We had eight 1500 point armies. Two of the armies were played by teams: a father and son team, and two friends. Loaner armies were provided for those who did not have one. The best part was enticing two WAB novices to play in the event. (I spent the first round teaching them the game, and let them play against each other. In subsequent rounds, the other players coached them on the rules.)

The format was one proposed on the WAB Yahoo Group. Round one had the eight armies fight four separate singles games. The loser of round one became the "vassal" of the winner. Round two consisted of two doubles games, with the "lords" and "vassals" of the previous game playing against each other. Once again, the losing side became the "vassal" to the winners. The final round was a 12,000 point game where the two groups of four armies each fought one grand battle.

We used the scenarios from the WAB Age of Arthur book, each table being set up with a different scenario. There was one exception, one table had a beach (one of those terrain mats from the U.K. which I originally got for Omaha Beach scenarios.) A village was set inland, for a take and hold scenario. The final scenario was an enlarged variant of the Dawn Attack scenario.

Games were limited to six turns or two hours, whichver came first. We took a lunch break after the first game. The game took place at a coffee shop which had a large downstairs area which was ideal for the event.

The eight armies were: two Age of Vortigern Armies, one Breton army, one Merovingian Frank army, two Irish armies (Sea Raiders and Dalriada), a Saxon Sea Raiders army, and a British Kingdoms army.
