San Francisco

April 8th 1920

It is already early evening when you reach San Francisco. There, you are greeted by a young nerdy guy [fit in description of REAL NERD (Lewis Scolnick of the 20s)]. "Hi, my name is Brown... euh Arnold Brown, but everyone calls me AAArnie... III'm from Berkeley's newspaper and I would like to meet with you sometime... I sure hope you will be able to give me a few minutes of your time... III mean, I know that there are journalists among you, but I'd like to get to meet you... I mean this is big !"

He seems to be so nervous, you can't help but smile. His speech is only slowed by bits of stuttering. He somehow reminds some of you of yourselves, a few years back.

His hand shaking as if he was seeing the King of England or the President, he hands you a card. He makes a nice bow to Christine, but can only support his action with stuttering and monosyllables.

"PPPplease give me a call, anytime, day or night...III would reallyreally like to sit with you... I could come during breakfast... I mean, I know you're leaving in two but... please..."

Before you can give him an answer, Arnie has disappeared. You all look at each other and laugh. You make sure all your luggage are carefully taken out of the train and headed for the harbour to be loaded on the boat.

Another young man comes to you "You must be the Miskatonic Expedition, am I right ? My name is Connor Finnley, owner of the Finnley Plaza hotel. Please excuse my tardiness. Dr Carver has made reservation for 8 rooms in my hotel for you."

After presenting yourself to him, he invites you to two nice car. You all take place in them, letting the chauffeurs take care of your hand baggages.

You check in to really nice rooms. Everything is clean and orderly, Mr Finnley invites you to call him or his staff for any and all needs you might have. There is one busboy per floor, next to the elevator.

You gather back for a long-delayed dinner because you decided to wait to get out of the train and eat on a terrasse, outside.

Avery was right that San Francisco is a place filled with people from all places. Mostly asian, but there are many blacks, latins and indians too, making San Francisco a very cosmopolitan city.

You finish your meal around 9PM.

James Millhouse

As the company finishes off dinner, James Millhouse says "I have to drop the latest installment off at my paper's West Coast office. After that, I guess I'll take on the local news hounds. Perhaps one of the more scientific oriented members would join me, and we will represent the company for the press. That will allow the rest of you to avoid having to deal with them."

Dr Turner

"I suppose that includes me," says Turner. He then leans forward to whisper to the group. "Very well. Before we go, we'd better discuss how to handle the issue of Avery and Dr Jones. Do we mention the new evidence about his disappearance? Do we mention the alleged murder of the Indian man? Do we mention Avery's existence at all?"

At the thought of appearing in the newspaper, Avery turns white. He had not thought about that. "No, do not mention me. I'm afraid my father might come for me. I shouldn't be here..."

With that, he bolts for his room.

Christine Delacroix

After dinner Christine is feeling a bit tired, when she hear James Millhouse's suggestion she says "What a marvellous idea Mr Millhouse", then she will add "Well gentlemen, I am feeling a bit tired after the journey so I think I will retire for the evening", she smiles at everyone as she leaves for her room. Still just before she leaves the terrace she looks back and says "Oh, and someone should talk to poor Mr Brown, he deserves something", as she walks away you can hear Christine say something about a clumsy little puppy.

Before she goes to bed Christine will try to get a nice warm bath, wash her hair and every part of her body after the long bothersome journey. Then she will have a glass of warm milk (order it from room service, she will tip the bellhop a quarter) before she brush her teeth and go to sleep.

The next morning she will be up at around 6:30, clean herself up, get dressed (something suitable for the whether, preferably a nice blue dress), and be ready for breakfast whenever that is served (probably around 7:00).

John Hayward

After Avery has left the room John puts forward some thoughts he has had on the expedition so far.

"I think that we should be a bit careful as there are some strange things happening here.

"As far as I know our departure dates did not get wide public circulation yet a lot of people seem to know of our plans although not secret. I agree with Avery that the less said about him the better as I think he knows more than he is letting on.

"If we are agreed on that I am going to reassure him on that score. John then leaves the room and heads for Avery's room to talk to him.

James Millhouse

Millhouse thinks for a moment and says "I think we should keep Avery and his whole story a secret. I don't think we'll be asked about it, but if we are, let's just say we have met Avery and we are going to investigate his story along with all the other strange things we have heard about the goings on in Alaska. Sound good to you, Dr. Turner?"

Dr Turner

"Considering Avery's reaction to the thought of public exposure," says Turner, "I don't think even mentioning it would be wise. Tell you what: let's not raise the subject of Dr Jones, and if it is raised we'll say that we don't know where he is - which is, after all, the truth."

James Millhouse

"Sounds just fine to me. A quick stop at my paper's San Francisco office, and then let's go meet the local news hounds."

John walks to Avery's room and knocks. No answer.

James Millhouse and Turner hop into a cab and head for the San Francisco Tribune, a newspaper where James knows one of the reporters. As you arrive there, you will be told by a secretary that everyone will be back tomorrow morning.

John Hayward

John will then knock again a bit harder. If there is no reply he will try the door. If it is open he will go in otherwise he will go to the busboy and ask him to keep an eye on Avery's room as his friend is feeling a bit out of sorts and I don't want him wandering about on his own. If you see him can you come and get me. He will tip the busboy and then retire to his room for the night.

Matt Michaels

Matt will go to his room and try to read through the papers, manuscripts, and notes the group has collected so far. He will eventually turn in so that he can get an early start in the morning. He intends to go to the most reputable library near by and search for references to Eskimo use of hallucinogens as well as Eskimo legends of flying creatures. On a side note Matt looks for any reference to Eskimos and summoned beings.

Peter Peate

Peter continues his resources into the "Ice Deers," looking for portable information to take with him to Alaska. He's somewhat disturbed by the lack of information on his quarry and is ready to look up folk tales, legends and other sources of "soft" information. He is fairly cool towards the other characters but invites Miss. Delacroix to assist him in his research.

If he has time Peter will also visit SF's Chinatown and look for similar legendary creatures in the folklore of northern Asia. Peter is still focused on the trip to Alaska and has little interest in mysteries or international discussions.

James-M and Turner are still out to the Tribune's offices. Matt, Christine, Peter, James-B and Preston have returned to their rooms.

John knocks harder. The Belboy peeks outside. Giving him a small idiotic smile (in these circumstances, we always look stupid !) and waves to show all is okay.

John turns the handle. To his surprise, it is unlocked. The room beyond in plunged in darkness. "Avery, Avery" he whispers. No answer. Listening intently, he doesn't hear breathing. All seems to be calm beyond the slightly opened door.

Preston Underwood

If it sits well with Matt, Preston will accompany him to the library. If not, Preston will persue his own interests -- meditating and reading ancient Indian scriptures.

Dr Turner

Turner turns to James. "Looks like we won't be able to do much here until morning," he says, "so shall we make our way back to the hotel?"

Christine Delacroix

As stated before on the night of the 8th Christine will be in bed, sleeping, she will not get up unless someone drags her out of said bed. She will get up at the crack of dawn on the 9th and join the others for breakfast.

When (on the 9th) Peter Peate asks or offers to let her help him with his research Christine will smile and say "Why of course Mr Peate, I would be happy to assist you, after all that is why I am here". She will be her usual helpful and friendly self. Although before she leaves she will mention "So will there be any time to do some shopping", and at some stage in the breakfast conversation she might casually remind someone that her birthday is May 1st.

Matt Michaels

Matt is happy to have the company and enthusiastically welcomes Preston along.

On the way to the library, Matt attempts to get to know Preston. "When we first met back in New England I seem to recall you said something about being a diplomat? You also mentioned languages? I am fluent in both English and Latin, but I am passable with Spanish or French. Sadly that is the extent of the languages I know. Didn't you say you had been to India recently? I have been around the States as well as a few trips to South America. That with a couple of trips to Africa is the limit to my practical experience."

Preston Underwood

If Preston accompanies Matt to the library he will strike up a conversation; starting with pleasantries and moving up to philosophical and scientific questions. While he studied classics as an undergraduate, Preston is no pedant -- he is interested in sweaping themes, the grand meaning of it all. In the course of his conversation with Matt Preston will ask such questions as wether his companion believes their is anything to be said for vitalism in the biological sciences and wether or not Matt believes mind is entirely reducible to matter. Preston will argue vigoriously against such a thesis, revealing his penchant for 'metaphysics'.

Preston sees modern science as impoverished and in some ways philosophically naieve. He is one of those rebeling from the deading encroachment of the sciences on religous matters.

As a person Preston is polite, friendly to a point but largely preoccuped by the suzreinty of ideas over the conduct of life. This is a little odd as Preston is not formally a scholar but is an accomplished adventurer and mountaneeer. It could be conjectured that in such activity Preston was always looking for something, much like his determination to become an amature 'orientalist.'

John Hayward

John is a bit puzzled there is no reply. He enters the room switching the light on. He will look through the suite to see if Avery is there. If Avery is there John will explain that he was worried about him and reassure him before retiring to room for the night. If Avery is not there but his document holder is he will wait for him after having closed the door. Otherwise he will retire for the night.

Dr Turner

Turner, when he returns to the hotel, does some quiet exercise before he goes to bed (his birth defect means he needs regular exercise just to maintain low-average physical strength). On the 9th, after talking to the press he'll pop into the largest local library to research the Eskimo - in particular, those Eskimo rituals that utilise hallucinogenics.

Preston Underwood

Preston is happy to talk to Matt. "India, yes, I toured the subcontinent from Ceylon to Nepal.

You see, I was finding my diplomatic duties to be less than fufiling. I joined the State Department after Princeton and I found myself fourth secretary to the court of George V. But my duties consisted of going to boring soirees and making sure my bosses laundry got done. So I left and joined an old prep school chums expedition to india -- a little mountainclimbing, some ameture Indology. Around that time I took up Sanskrit. In India, I stayed on for a few years, I picked up conversational Hindi and a few words in Tamil. As for languages I majored in classics in college, so I have some latin and greek. Maybe one day I'll buckle down and do a thesis in Indology, become an accredited as opposed to itinereant scholar. "

"How about you matt ? Are you married ? Sister, girlfriend ?

James Millhouse

In the morning, James will look for Turner, and ask him to accompany him to the Trib's offices again.

Matt Michaels

Matt listens intently to Preston's story, smiling and nodding sympathetically when the boring soirees are mentioned. "I have done most of my field work on expeditions led by my parents. They occasionally forced me to accompany them to the various functions which are required to garner financial support for the sciences. The money bags always want to show off their prized possessions, even if they are people."

Matt's mood lightens and he continues "But you asked about family. No girlfriend at this time, but that may change once I get to stay in the area of the University for a bit. I have a younger sister and two younger brothers. My sister is occupied by Egyptology and occult studies, she has a slight obsession with Bast and cats in the occult. My brothers have yet to settle on a specific area and are happy to continue to accompany our parents and help them in their research."

Christine Delacroix

As Christine and Peter Peate go on their quest for the Ice Deer she will (if he wants to) have a conversation with him. It can be about anything he wants to talk about, although she will mention "Speaking of legends and Ice Deer, many cultures have legends of flying animals, or rather normal animals that have received bird wings, usually these wings are either of a bird of prey, like the eagle, or a scavenger like the raven". She will then smile innocently and add "Such creatures are commonly called Chimera, from Greek mythology, same place that Pegasus comes from, but in both Egypt and Mesopotamia creatures with the body of a bull or a lion, and eagles wings, and sometimes human head or arms were quite common". She will finish "Well, maybe we are dealing with a Chimera of our own, the deer would be very important to people in the north since it would be a major food source, and Eagles are admired by all Indian groups".

After her speech she will smile and say "Oh dear, I do go on and on", then she will look at him and say "Oh by the way, the Chinese has something called Ki-Rin

April 9th 1920

John enters the room and looks around. He will find all of Avery's single set of clothes lying on the floor next to the window (which is closed but not locked). The document holder is nowhere obvious. (From your message I supposed that John is not making a very thorough search). With that John will retire to his room.

In the morning, after a short breakfast, the group will each break off in different directions.

James-M and Turner return to the Tribune where, after a long wait, they meet Mitch Miller, an occasional correspondant to the Sentinel (Millhouse's paper). Miller is happy to see Millhouse and sais that the research on his current article (something to do with a woman who keep loosing her cats) brought him out of the office for a few hours. He will say that he has heard of the expedition, but his editor refuse to have it covered, like the Jones' one.

Preston and Matt head for the public library. There they will sit and read about the eskimos, hallucinogens and their mythology. Most of the pages are torn off. Though it looks more like an act of rage than one of delicate, scholarly pursuit. You get to learn more of the eskimo way of life.

Peter and Christine head for Berkeley-U where they begin to look around the library for hallucinogenic substances. After about a half-day of research, they will come across the "Mycerus Dominis" a type of fungal moss that, when rubbed vigorously on the body, creates very powerful hallucinations. A warning is given as to the effects of ingesting the moss.

Since I don't have any action for Jim-B and John, I will suppose they both took care of some details regarding the expeditions itself (confirming the reservation for the boat)

Avery has not been seen since he ran off last night.

Christine Delacroix

Christine does raise an eyebrow at this, then she says "Well, Mr Peate, I do not think this is it, after all Mr Jones got his hallucinations after he inhaled the smoke from that fire". She then stops, thinks, then says "Maybe the herbs on the fire was not a common Eskimo substance, after all some Indian tribes smoked hallucinogenic herbs in their pipes along with tobacco, so maybe it got traded to the Eskimos". She smiles and shrugs "Well, it's just a suggestion".

After this she will be eager to go see the Chinatown, she will also let him hold her arm and say "To be honest I would never dare go to that place without an escort to keep me safe", she will smile at him clearly waiting for some encouraging remark.

Well when Christine learns about this (whenever she and Peter Peate return) she will seem quite worried and say "Oh my, he seemed like such a gentleman, I hope nothing has happened to him".

Dr Turner

"Well James, it looks like nobody's that interested with us," says Turner. "If you'll excuse me - I wish to do some research in town before we continue. I'll be at Berkeley University if you need me, otherwise I'll see you at the hotel."

Turner pops along to Berkeley and tries to talk to someone in the anthropology department, archaeology department, or any other department Jones might have contacted. He'll try to ask them about what Jones was planning to do, where he was going to go, whether or not he mentioned contacting any Indians, what the name of those Indians was, etc.

James Millhouse

"Then I guess I will see you later, Doctor. With nothing better to do, I think I will spend the day taking in the sights. This is my first time in California, and I have been wanting to see the places I have heard of so much for a long time. Assuming nothing comes up, I should be back at the hotel for dinner this evening. Have a good day."

With that, James tips his hat, and goes to have what he hopes will be an enjoyable day.

Dr Turner

I'm gonna SORT of backtrack...

Notice how Turner said in earshot of James where he'd be? Well, this time round he says it in such a way as to suggest that if the journalist wants to talk he should go to Berkeley to do it.

Turner reaches Berkeley when he spots Arnie sitting on the stairs with a group of other nerdy students. Before he has the option of evading the ambitious young reporter, Arnie has called him and is coming towards him.

"Hi, you're Dr... Turner ! I'm so glad you came for my short interview. I was getting desperate ! Ohboyohboyohboy ! This is gonna be the biggest number ever ! Do you want to come to the cafeteria or we can to a small cafe or..."

Christine Delacroix

Looking out the window Christine gets a pained expression on her face, then she smiles and giggles a little, she turns to Peter Peate and says "Mr Peate, looks like Dr Turner has fallen into the clutches of that young guy, uhm, what's his name, Arnie something". She points at the scene outside the library, then she says "Maybe I should bail him out", she looks at Mr Peate for suggestions.

Dr Turner

For a moment, Turner is surprised to see Arnie, but he skillfully covers it up. He goes over to Arnie. "Hello Arnie," he says, "I was expecting to see your colleague. Do you know where he is?" He shakes the lads hand and takes the opportunity to lean over and say "Not so eager Arnie, reporters listen rather than talk." (A choice tidbit from Turner's own knowledge of interviewing people as part of his folklorist career.)

"Thank you Doctor... you don't mind if I call you doctor now do you ? What colleague of mine do you want to see ? My editor you mean ? Oh! He's out for now... you know he and his girlfriend went out to "try" his new car..." Then Arnie laughs and so do all his buddies.

Dr Turner

"Not the editor," says Turner, "I mean 'colleague' in that one might describe another folkorist as one of my colleagues... there's a chap from the Tribune who was eager for an interview. I was planning to give it to him - wider exposure and all that - and it would be somewhat unfair of me to talk to another journalist - but I might consider granting a brief interview for some information.

"You're very interested in this Alaska expedition, right? So you'll know that we're following in the footsteps of another scientist - a Dr Jones. You wouldn't know anything about him would you?"

When Turner turns him down, Arnie looks really depressed. He seemed to be looking forward to the interview very much.

"A Folklorist... hummm Maybe Mr. Beavers. I know where he should be now, follow me." Turner begins to follow the young reporter on the beautiful campus.

After his friends have disappeared behind the building, Arnie is quick to add. "And yes.. I did meet Dr Jones a while ago with his son before they left for Anchorage... I can tell you more, but I want my interview..."

Turner feels that there will be no escaping the interview. But he also feels that Arnie DOES know something.(That he will gladly tell in exchange for the interview). Arnie seems like a nice fellow, if only a little insistant and well, nerdy.

Christine Delacroix

Christine smiles slightly as she sees Dr Turner take control over the situation, then she says "Poor kid, he's so nervous, maybe I should talk to him just to be nice", she looks at Peter Peate and say "Unless you would mind Mr Peate?".

John Hayward

John is very much puzzled by Avery's disappearance so will mention what happen when he meets the others at breakfast. He will then return to Avery's room to see if he has returned.

Dr Turner

"Very well, Arnie, tell me about Jones and ask your questions," says Turner.

John returns to Avery's room and still finds it unlocked. Nothing seems to have changed, his clothes still in a dirty pile. Obviously Avery has not returned. John will leave with James-B to do some tasks and upon his return to the hotel, check on Avery once more. This time the room has been made, most likely by the chambermaid. Still no new about Avery.

Preston and Matt can pursue some additional researching on different topic if they want. So can Peter, but at the University.

James Millhouse will end into town. He can see there are a number of immigrants. The constant activity is very surprising. People going to one place, cars and cart moving in the streets. As he is walking down the street, he notices a taylor whose display has the exact same suit as Avery had. James remembers that John had mentionned that Avery was missing this morning at breakfast.

Dr. Turner gives a small interview to Arnie who wants to know some real basic facts, as well as a little about Turner and the other members of the Expedition. Turner is surprised that Arnie is very well organised, his questions are all neatly printed in his little notebook. Turner gets the feeling that once Arnie gets over his excitement over something, he might become a great reporter.

After about 15 minutes of interviewing, Arnie thanks Turner and begins to scroll through his notebook. "Oh Here." Arnie sais he has the Jones interview in his book. Stating a few basic facts, he then begins the following:

"Dr Jones's son seemed weird. He is all pale and keeps shivering, possible fever. A. keeps looking during interview. Looking for something/one. DrJ talks about old civilizations of the north no one ever knew. Shows me a painting of tower/mountain/rocky spike. Sais it was given to him by a Dr Carver of Misk-U. Sais it gives location of city."

Following is a small hand-made reproduction where little more than a spike can be seen. Arnie has placed a number of dot around the summit.

Christine Delacroix

Upon seeing Arnie talking to Dr Turner, and not getting any response from Mr Peate she says "Mr Peate, I'll just go talk to that nice Arnie". She then leaves the library and goes to where Dr Turner and Arnie is standing, when she gets there she puts up a smile and says "Hello Dr Turner, Mr Brown", she looks at Arnie and says "I do hope you got your interview". She then waits for him to respond, if he seems a bit uncertain and tries to say something she will give him a dazzling smile, look innocently at him and say "Yes?" in a curious tone of voice.

With Christine's arrival the confident and able Arnold Brown, reporter turns back to Arnie, the nerd. He looses himself and can't seem to stop staring at the french beauty.

Dr. Turner

Turner turns to Christine and hands her the interview with Jones Arnie gave him to Christine for safekeeping. "We've made a fair exchange," he says. "You'll be pleased to know we both have got what we wanted - Arnold here has his interview and I know where to find one of my brother Folkorists, and I've found some information about whose footsteps we're following in." He then asks Arnold for directions to Mr Beavers' office.

Christine Delacroix

Christine looks a bit puzzled, then she says "I do not think we have been formally introduced yet", she smiles and holds out her hand (so that he may shake it or kiss it) and says "I am Christine Delacroix, the secrétaire". Dr Turner will notice that her French accent seems a bit more obvious than usual.

Christine takes the interview, then she says "Fascinating Dr Turner", as she gently place it in her handbag. She will listen intently to Arnies instructions. Then as Dr Turner is leaving (assuming he does not ask her to follow him), Christine looks at Arnie and says "So tell me Mr Brown, what do you study here? Beyond journalism that is?".

Dr. Turner

Unless she seems really eager to go and watch a discussion between folklorists, Turner won't ask Christine to come along.

After introducing himself to Christine, as Arnie Brown, student reporter, he gently shakes her hand, his own trembling. Arnie then mumbles some rough directions to Turner, still looking at Christine. When Turner feels confident he will find the place, he leaves, heading for prof Beavers office.

Arnie will stutter to Christine that he'd gladly offer her a coffee, if she wants and there they could talk. Christine agrees and soon they are walking towards the coffeehouse. In so doing, they pass before the steps where Arnie' buddies are sitting, slackjawed and surprised that Arnie is accompanied by such a beautiful woman.

They both sit at a table and order something. Arnie managed to relax a little during the walk and, like a good reporter has asked her a few questions about herself and about the expedition.

Turner reaches the office of Athely Beavers. His door is scratched with beavers and indian symbols: grossly imitated totem, names such as "Geronimo", "Black Kettle", "Canadian Raven" and "Sitting Bull" also appear. Either he is not a well-liked professor or he is just plain weird.

After knocking on the door, a faint "come in" is heard. Turner opens it slowly. Beyond is a place filled with indian artifacts. The whole place seems to be filled with item from different tribes. Many furs cover the walls and a small gas burner acts as a fire. Half-sitting, half-lying down on bearskins, is a twiggy-thin man. Upon seeing you, he gets up and extends a hand.

"Athely Beavers, I'm a folklore professor here-eh. How aboot you ?" Turner instantly recognize his Canadian accent. Thus explaining the "Canadian-Raven" reference on the door.

Dr Turner

"Glad to meet you sir," greets Turner, who shakes Dr Beavers' hand firmly. "I'm Dr Turner, folklore professor from Miskatonic in New England. I'm on an expedition to Alaska and have come across a curious little problem - it's sort of folklore-related, but it's also an anthropological issue. Would you mind awfully if I discussed it with you?"

"Yes, I read about that in some papers I sometimes get from the east coast. A very dynamic school indeed that Miskatonic..." He gestures Turner to take place on a warm bearskin.

"What brings you to Alaska then Dr Tuner ? What's with that folklore problem you have. If you're lacking a few words from the raindance, I might just help you." Both men laugh at the folklorist joke.

Christine Delacroix

Christine will be smiling and talking to Arnie, seemingly without noticing his friends, even though she is sure they are noticing her. She will have a friendly distance, not close enough for physical contact, but close enough to seem friendly.

Christine will order French roast coffee, and she will be quite liberal with the cream and the sugar. She will stir it a little, sip gently at first because it is so hot, and then drink. She will take care to use proper manners (or as well as she can anyway).

Christine will answer the question as well as she can. Even so she will be a little restrained when it comes to answering question of her own past, of herself she will say "Well I'm from Quebec, I used to work for Professor Jean-Luc Laroque, maybe you have heard of him?". As for the expedition and her place in it she will say "Well, I am just the secretary, but I find it really interesting, we are going to look for this strange stone city that is supposed to exist in the North". She smiles and then says "It is really fascinating, archaeology that is, are you interested in it Mr Brown?".

She will also notice "Well, I will be going tomorrow, it is a pity since I would really like to see more of this city", and then look a bit sad, then she says "But I would rather not wander about on my own".

Arnie will say that archeology has never really interested him, he was really anxious to do this interview with a number of famous authors. He hopes to become a lawyer one day and to found a law newspaper destined for everyone.

When Christine express sadness about not being able to see SF, Arnie will jump. "Well Miss, if you want to I could show you around. I know everyone who's someone ! If you'd like I would love to show you around. I don't want to take you from your job, but since you have so little, let me show you the city. Its so beautiful." Christine thinks Arnie is a sweet boy.

James Millhouse

Knowing that the chances of finding anything are slim, James decides to step into the tailor's, and ask about the suit, with the hope that it'll bring us closer to finding Avery.

Dr Turner

Turner makes himself confortable on the bearskin and briefs Dr Beavers on the purpose of the expedition - to investigate legends of a previously unknown city-building civilisation in the Alaska area. "Of course," says Turner, "being a folklorist I just had to get involved - if the civilisation existed I could study its folklore, and if it didn't I could study the folklore surrounding it!"

He looks around to make sure nobody's passing by then leans closer to Beavers. "I'm telling you this part," he says, "because I feel that I can trust you, but you must swear not to tell a soul. If word of this gets out a man's life might be in danger, perhaps more danger than he believes to be in already."

He then quietly tells Beavers about Avery Jones, and what they had been told by Avery. He also tells Beavers about his theory about some sort of hallucinogenic being placed on the fire, causing Avery's visions and Dr Jones' temporary insanity.

"I was wondering whether you knew of any rituals that might have been carried out here.

"Also, these hand gestures - could they be some sort of primitive summoning spell? Or is the monster's summoning just part of Avery's hallucinations?"

Christine Delacroix

Christine will smile at this and say "I think that is a wonderful idea Mr Brown, and I am sure you will see it through". When the subject once more strays onto books Christine will casually remark "Anyway I still have Professor Laroque's diaries, he left them to me in his will, maybe I can have them published one day". She will look a bit sad when she mentions Professor Laroque.

Christine smiles and says "I would love to, but I will have to tell the others first, after all I am supposed to work for them", however she says "Though I can't see why they would say no". She is also a little insistent that they must be back before 11PM.

Anyway assuming she can go what Christine is the most interested in is famous people, nice scenery, nice buildings, Emperor Norton, and China Town. If they go to China Town she will be very curious, but also stay really close to Arnie, at this stage she will allow him to hold her arm. She is not really afraid, but she does not want to get lost.

Oh if there are any fortune tellers in China Town, the kind that don't advertise too heavily, Christine will say "Hey look Arnie, let's check it out". She wants her fortune told.

James-M enters the store. Inside is an Italian taylor. Very easily recognizeable with his thick accent. He is very friendly. Upon being asked about the suit, he will answer "Yes, this is da new trrend. Verry classy this season. Everryone wants one !"

James will add the description of Avery, Giovanni (the taylor) will think for a moment. "Yes, yes... I rrememberr da man.. He came in and paid me in gold. I asked him wherre he got da money. You know I make an honeste living here... He told me about a chineese antique dealer who paid him... Fu Lim, or Lim Fu... You know their names are pretty much all da same ! And they all look alike !"

Beavers will listen intently to Turner, nodding his head often. Once the Dr will finish, Beavers will venture the following. "If hallucinogenics were used and inhaled, they would have to have been imported. For I know of no inhalable substances native to Alaska... And if your Avery has inhaled such substances, he would need to have been VERY close. From your tale, he seemed to have been far away. From what I gather, either your Avery is lying or..."

He lowers his head. "As bizarre as it might seem, Avery might REALLY have seen that thing of fantasy ! Of course, I think the second option is rather far-fetched..."

Christine warns Peter that she is going with Arnie. Peter barely lifts his head from his book. So pretty soon, they are walking around town in a streetcar. Just before supper, Arnie and Christine reach Chinatown. Passing the multicolored, thin-streets of the place, until Arnie pulls Christine in a small restaurant.

"I'm sure you'll like this place, Christine" (After such a day, they both are on first-name basis). So they eat some Peking Duck. Its sweet and delicious.

Dr Turner

Turner ponders what Beavers has told him. "This changes everything," he says. "Tell me, when Avery visited Berkeley, did you get to see him? I'd be interested to know what he looked like, because if I have been lied to the liar might well not be Avery at all, but an impostor."

"Also, what do you think of this story of a northern city-building civilisation of stellar origin? Could that also be partly true? I know of no prior knowledge that says that a city-building civilisation shouldn't exist - the alien origin part could merely be part of their folklore."

Christine Delacroix

As they eat Christine will make small talk with Arnie, she will ask him about how Berkeley is, what the other students are like, if he has any family or a girlfriend (if no girlfriend ask "Why doesn't a nice guy like you have a girlfriend?"). Oh and finally she will ask him "Say do you know about any fortune tellers here? I always wanted to have my fortune read". And she will clearly enjoy the food.

John Hayward

John will suggest to James that after check the parties arrangements at the shipping office they go down to china town and have a look around at antique dealers. There can't be to many with the name Fu Lim or Lim Fu. Even if there are several they are not likely to have many Eskimo artefacts so we might be able to track something down.

At the shipping office we'll talk to the clerk there and find out what information/gossip there is about the Jones expedition. Alaska being sparsely populated means that what news there is spreads quickly and the shipping people will have been talking to the ship crews.

John Hayward and James Millhouse bumped into each other as Millhouse was leaving the taylorshop.

James Millhouse

By the way, do you know of a good restaraunt we could stop in for some lunch on the way?

John Hayward

There is The Jade Dragon in Chinatown itself d if your stomach can wait I know it won't be disappointed. I went there a few weeks back as I was travelling to Arkham (Our ship had docked here which is why I seem to have ended up with the job of sorting out the travel arrangements) and I have become very fond of Chinese food.

By the way what do think about Avery? I think there is something very strange going on with him.

James Millhouse

The Jade Dragon sounds just fine.

As for Avery, I am not sure what to think about him. He pops up from nowhere, with his story that sounds more like something he saw in an opium den here in San Francisco, rather than in Alaska. And he is rather non chalant when it comes to investigating dead bodies or even reporting them. I hope we find that what ever passes for a police force in Alaska doesn't allow people to kill one another out in the wilderness and go unpunished. But that is for when we get to Alaska. Now, we should be thinking of Chinatown, and what we may find there.

Beavers lights a cigarette on the little burner, after offering one to Turner. "Well I didn't meet Avery, but I met his father by accident. He seemed very odd. He always kept a document holder on himself."

"A brown leather one ?" adds Turner describing Avery's holder.

"Yes it was worn to the point of ugliness. Well he spent a lot of time in the library. That's where I met him. He was reading things about eskimos and northern civilizations."

"I guess it could make sense that at some point, man erected cities there. However I doubt anyone would create a civilization and erect stone buildings during the short months of summer !"

"Or maybe the aliens simply brought rocks from outer space !" jokes Beavers.

Arnie is very happy to be with Christine and the small talk is very interesting (as much as ST can be). Arnie is a funny fellow with a brainy kind of humor. He doesn't have a girlfriend because he works too hard at school, and doesn't have time for courting, but his mother is pushing him constantly to find himself a girl.

"Fortune teller... My mom saw one last year, an old man with a house packed with stuff and he did palm readings and tea leaves. He was really good, for he told her my dad would fall ill in the spring and early april, my dad broke his leg ! He lives not far from here. Do you want more Chow mein ?"

Dr Turner

Turner laughs at Beavers' joke. He then tells Beavers the route the party will be taking and asking whether Beavers knows any Eskimo wise men in Alaska that Turner might be able to contact.

After getting any information about this, Turner (who is now all cross about being lied to by Avery) will go back to the hotel and knock on Avery's room's door. If Avery's still gone he'll pop in and search the place for the document holder. He'll do a fairly thorough search but will try not to break everything and leave everything where it was left by Avery. (He'll move things, sure, but he'll put them back afterwards). If anyone should happen to encounter him along the way, Turner looks a tad annoyed. What with his birthmark and all, this makes him look quite comical.

Christine Delacroix

Christine will smile a little and say "I hear mothers can be like that", then she adds "I'm sure you will find someone", her smile goes a little wider as she says so. She will ask him a few questions about his family, let him talk about a subject he likes.

At one stage she might casually mention "There's so much talk about this Eugenics these days, a poor girl hardly knows what to think, what do you think?". She is interested.

Once again Christine smiles "Uh, I guess I'd better be careful with what I eat", she then adds jokingly "After all I would not want to end up a big fat cow". Anyway on the subject of the fortune teller she says "I think that would be an excellent idea, I've always wanted to do something like this, just never had the time before". She is in other words quite eager to go, after all she only got one day in San Francisco.

Arnie will talk about his brother and sister quite openly. He loves them, even though they keep playing pranks on him all the time. His mother is rather controlling. His father is a foreman for a lumbering company. Arnie works hard at the paper to pay for his tution (it gives him a scholarship, but he has to work very hard.

Arnie promises to bring Christine to the fortune teller... if he can find where it is.

Beavers will say that he doesn't know any indians from there. Those he knows are in British Columbia (Canada' westernmost province). He will bid farewell to Turner and ask for a copy of his travel journal.

Turner returns to the hotel and goes to Avery's room. (Turner just missed John by about 1 hour) The room is still unlocked. With some additional research, Turner will find two business cards inside the sweat-filled suit (the rest of the room doesn't yield anything).

The first card reads "Giovanni Ricollo, Taylor" and gives an address in SF. The other is "Kim Fu Lu, Art & Collectibles, 356 Chi-Ha-Ru St., Chinatown."

Dr Turner

Alright, Turner flips a coin to choose which lead to follow. Surprise, surprise (unless you feel inclined to go over old material again) it lands tails - he's going to talk to Kim!

As he strolls along to Chinatown Turner tries to summon his knowledge of Chinese culture and folklore so he can get into the Oriental mindset.

Christine Delacroix

Christine will smile and nod at this, then she says "They sound like nice people", then with a somewhat sad smile she says "It must be nice to have a family". She quickly change the subject to asking him about the people he works with in the newspaper.

Christine will simply nod and say "That is fine with me", she will have no problem tagging along with him to look.

San Francisco

April 9th 1920

James-M and John are looking around like crazy, so is turner who even with the address is having a hard time finding the place. The three men cross each other without seeing the others. Well not before 2-3 steps. Then they turn around and regroup.

From the corner of her eye, Christine notices the 3 men talking in the street. Arnie is trying to ask Christine about her own family.

Dr Turner

"Gosh, you're looking for this Kim gentleman too, are you?" says Turner to the others. "Well, hopefully as a group with the correct name we'll have better luck finding him. Shall we approach a local and ask for directions?"

Christine Delacroix

Christine will look at the men talking for a brief moment, trying to determine if they are part of the group. Then her attention is drawn back to Arnie, she looks a bit sad, then she says "Well Arnie, I am an orphan, I never had a family".

Arnie takes Christine's hand to comfort her. "Well, know that if you do not have a family, you'll always have a friend in the Brown household."

Christine Delacroix

Christine smiles, then she says "Merci", then she looks outside, she seems a bit surprised "Look Arnie Dr Turner, Mr Hayward and Mr Millhouse are outside". She does not suggest they go outside, after all the three gentlemen can probably manage on their own. She is however keen on going to look for the fortune teller, so she might say hello to them as she and Arnie leave.

James Millhouse

Millhouse thinks for a moment and says "From my expiriences back in New York, close knit communities, such as the Chinese or the Jews, tend to think of anyone asking around as government, or at best, someone not to be helped, if not outright ignored. Let's ask around anyway, and maybe we'll find someone who'll think otherwise. Try for the young, they tend to be more Americanized, and tend to be easier to talk to. And remember, saying that you're not a cop might just give them the opposite impression. Well, let's see what we can come up with."

Dr Turner

"Very well," says Turner, "perhaps if we present ourselves as rich eccentrics willing to do business with Kim they'll be more inclined to help out."

John Hayward

John voices the opinion the foreign accents will also help as will our knowledge of native artifacts (somewhat unfashionable) but you are right it would be best to go quietly.

Matt Michaels

Matt, after spending seemingly fruitless effort at the library, returns to the hotel to check in with the others. He will check every ones rooms to see if they are about or if there is any indication of their whereabouts. If he finds no one he will return to his room to pen a few lines to his parents and siblings telling them briefly of his current expedition and wishing them well. He will make one last check of the rooms then go to mail the letter. Afterwards he will wander the city, looking for outfitters shops which might have information or rumors about Alaska. If asked he will give reasons of research and gold as to why he is interested.

John, James-M and Turner are surprised to see Arnie and Christine appear from the restaurant in front of which they were discussing.

As a lucky shot, Turner asks Arnie about Kim Fu Lu's shop. Thinking a little, he sais: "Yeah... Weren't they the store that was closed because they were involved in criminal activities ? If you want to find the store just go..." Arnies gives very precise and methodical direction to the three men, who will have no problem finding the place.

Matt returns from the library. Asking the clerk, he will learn that both Dr Turner and John Hayward have returned for a short time but that both are now out. Turner was holding a business card in his had as he was leaving.

So, leaving the hotel, he takes a nice walk in town, stopping for a light dinner. As he heads out, he spots 2 chinese men, dressed in silk chinese outfits, walking with Avery. The son of the Archeologist, is talking to them obviously in chinese because they seem to be talking real fast. Avery has changed into a chinese silk uniform as well.

Christine Delacroix

Christine will be her usual smiling friendly self, she will then ask "So tell me Mr Brown", she is formal when her bosses are around "Do you think you could show me that fortune teller you talked about?". She will then smile and quickly add "No offence, but I am not too keen on going to a shop that was involved in criminal activities".

James Millhouse

Thanking Arnie for the directions, Millhouse asks "Well, who's coming with me?" and starts heading off to the shop.

John Hayward

John strikes out after Millhouse. As they walk along he suggests that with all the strange goings on the might want to do a quick reconnoitre before committing themselves. We could just walk past on the other side of the street and if it looks OK come back more slowly as if we were actually looking for someplace.

Dr Turner

As Turner follows he agrees with John's plan.

Arnie turns to Christine and sais "Sure Miss, I'm sure you'll like that chinese fellow." And they are off to find the fortune teller shop.

The three men follow Arnie's direction (which were wrong only by the fact that the Kim Fu Lu A&C sign has been removed). The entrance, a narrow door which must've been barred by planks at some point, because there are a few planks in front of the door, having apparently been torn off. (Nails showing)

You move ahead and turn the corner where you stop to discuss your next action.

Although Arnie is good at giving direction, he is not as apt at following them. After some time spent searching, and passing numerous tellers, Christine and him find the "Bill Wong Fortune Teller". "Bill Wong ! That's the name. I think his real name cannot be pronounced, so he changed it."

Christine holds Arnie's arm tight as they enter. There are aquariums with odd-colored snakes and lizards, a dried monkey head, a mummified tiger's paw. A number of weird items are scattered across the place.

"Jussaminitt !" calls out a ol chinese voice in the back store. "Yes, Me com me com !" an old chinese man comes out. He manages to find a chair and sits his old, dusty bones.

"My friend would like to have her fortune read." Arnie sais, pulling a small chair for Christine. Christine has the creep of this place filled with oddities.

James Millhouse

Millhouse looks around the area nervously. "To be honest, I don't like the look of this. But, we've come this far, we may as well continue. I say we go in, but cautiously. After all, it's better to be safe than sorry, no?"

Matt Michaels

Matt will attempt to follow the trio at a distance to avoid being spotted. He will try to appear as if he is sight seeing. If it becomes obvious that he has been spotted, Matt will act surprised to see Avery then approach him and ask directions about the quickest way back to the hotel.

Christine Delacroix

Christine sits down, then she smiles and says "Uhm, hello Mr Wong", she seems a bit nervous, but also fascinated at the same time. She is quite eager to have her fortune told, things like that has always fascinated her, and now she has both the money and the time. She does ask "So, how do you do it?".

Matt begins to follow Avery. However, since trailing people isn't one of Matt's greatest ability, he can tell Avery has noticed him, but the British adventurer ignores Matt. They turn on a street and head towards Chinatown.

Bill Wong sais "Me read women guts..." Christine recoils in terror and Arnie moves forward, but the old chinese just laugh. "You funny ! You Good ! HAHAHA Ol' Chinese Jok ol jok ! hahaha Me read chickin feters."

A younger chinese (his son you guess) come in, holding a live chicken. "Pluck feters ! Pluck !" sais the young man. He holds the chicken steadily by its neck and feet. Though it can (and does) fan its wings, they pose no threat.

Arnie smiles "Go ahead Miss Christine. Its not dangerous."

Dr Turner

"Looks like a horrible place," says Turner. "I'll take up the rear, to check if anyone watches us as we go in. Who wants to go in first?"

Christine Delacroix

Christine seems a bit squeamish (she dislikes hurting animals), then as she reach out she asks "Uhm, can you tell a little about my family while your at it?", she then careful moves and plucks some feathers until it is enough. She's not quite sure if she is to let them fall down onto the floor or hold them, but she guess he'll tell her. Christine wonder if he can tell her a little something about her mother and father.

James Millhouse

Millhouse says "I volunteer to go first. Into the valley of death rode the six hundred, and all that. Right?"

Dr Turner

"I doubt you'd get killed in there unless you eat something and get food poisoning," says Turner. "Let us proceed."

After a single feather, Mr Wong sais "Okay, Enof ! Oh... an interesting place for feter..."

"Now pluck feter !"

Christine pulls a few of the feather's "fur" until Mr. Wong sais "Enof !"

Taking the feather from Christine, he begins. "You come from far far away. And you go near where you born. I see you fader. He is big man, but not liked at all. Scary man ! Your moder... I don't see much, but I can say you have same looks. Very pretty woman. Very Pretty."

"Anyting else you want ?"

Stepping over the boards, James-M opens the door. Beyond is a narrow corridor, ill-lighted corridor, yet there seem to be light further, in a room. John and Turner notices that everyone are looking at you, but take no action.

Dr Turner

"Let's not linger," says Turner, and indicates for the others to go along so he can get into the corridor and shut the door.

Christine Delacroix

Christine smiles a little, she seems surprised, then she says "Well can you see anything about where I am going", she also seems quite impressed so far.

At Turner's request the three men walk forward. James stops. "Voices" he whispers... Concentrating the other two manage to indeed hear voices. "Sounds like they are singing something..."

"In chinese" adds John. "Damn, where's Preston when we need him !"

"What they keep singing has an odd sound to it. I think they might be preying." sais James.

"I know of not such chants in chinese religion. They mostly use personnal meditative technique and few chants, but nothing like this. Unless they are part of a cult I know nothing of." Turner says.

Christine asks Mr Wong about her travel. He opens his eyes and focuses on the feather once more. "You look great stone work. Yet you and your companions see tings few people see. Answers lies not where you think, but under de rox." Christine knows his enigmatic answer is all he will say on the subject. Looking up, she will see Arnie has a puzzled look on his face. He seems a little skeptical about Mr Wong.

John Hayward

John will move slowly and quietly down the corridor if it appears that he can without being noticed. He will motion the others forward with him. He is trying to find out more about what is going on with the chanting. i.e. looking through keyholes etc.

Christine Delacroix

Christine seems fascinated, then she says "Thank you Mr Wong", she will allow Arnie to make an effort to pay first (being a gentleman), but she will pay herself if need be. She is strangely quiet afterwards. She will allow Arnie to guide her onwards through the city.

James Millhouse

James moves closer, trying to get a look into the room to see what is going on, but making sure that he remains unseen to anyone in the room. He also watches his step, to make sure he does not step on any loose boards, that might creak and give their presence away.

Dr Turner

Turner advances, glancing occasionally over his shoulder to ensure that the trio are not followed. He also makes an effort to appear quiet and, if there's room, also peeps into the room. If it looks like it would be awkward (and noisy!) to try and get to see then he won't bother

Arnie pays mr Wong and escorts Christine outside. As soon as they are both outside, he will begin questionning Christine. "Did you understand a word he said ? I mean its not like he wanted anyone to understand. I could say thing that are about as cryptic as he did ! 'You will see a flower that is a mountain !' Tell me Christine did you understand a word he said ? When my mom came he told her to see a Russian doctor for her back, not something that under the rock but that IS the rock." Christine can make out that Arnie is not used to cryptic messages. Arnie will continue this self-interrogation (because he doesn't let Christine talk) until he turns to Christine. "Where do you want to go now ? How about a coffee ?"

The three men move forward. Since there is no door, James kneel to give the others a view. Inside are ten chinese men who are chanting and all facing something you can't see from where you are standing. They all wear chinese garbs, "Noblemen" Turner will whisper, with silk yellow hats. These hats shine in the candle light. Shaped oddly they vaguely remind you of chef's hats. "Those are not chinese, they don't wear hats like that James will whisper only to have his two fellows nod their heads.

A nice odor filters out of the room, something like flowers and... and... vinegar (!), but not sweeter. The whole effect makes it rather pleasant.

"Over there" points James. Looking in that direction, you can see there are 4 or 5 men lying on the floor. All are smoking from a strange pipe. "An opium den" sais John.

One of the men begins to have a series of convulsions. "I thought opium induced a restful sleep." sais Turner.

One of the puffy-hatted chinese sit near the man with a parchment as if to note what the man will say. After a series of severe convulsions, the man will settle down and voice out in a loud voice:

"YA WA SHOO ! YA WA SHOO ! Tsong kah Tsu mow Bok zing sow toe maaaa YA WA SHOO !"

The man then begins to convulse once more, this time saliva bubbles and he is taken by severe shakings. He will stop convulsing in an odd position. Three noblemen will come and take him to the front of the room (that you still can't see).

Dr Turner

Turner whispers to the others. "Gentlemen, I suggest you prepare yourselves to leave in a hurry. If this is indeed an opium den, its owners might not be that merciful to unwanted guests. Hmmm.... perhaps we shall watch and wait, and if we are discovered pretend to be intoxicated by the opium."

John Hayward

John nods in silent agreement.

Christine Delacroix

Christine smiles and then says "Coffee sounds good to me", on the way she will mention "I wish I could have met her, my mother that is...", she sighs and then she says "Destineé" and looks a bit sad. After a while she seems to cheer up a little, she will go have her coffee (she would prefer a French or Italian place), she will comment "I hope you won't mind me saying so, but America coffee usually leaves a lot to be desired".

Arnie leads Christine to a small coffeehouse near the hotel. There are many students there and she can feel that Arnie is showing her off a little, female vanity... she loves it (but will never admit it). Sitting down he will ask for two cappucinos and a piece of cake, which he offers to share with Christine.

Not having moved from their spot. The trio, will hear a weird sound. It is like a gurgle and velcro hooking and unhooking. All the priest will begin anew to chant. However, their song has changed and they sing what the man had said. YA-WA-SHOO and so on...

You will have to expose yourselves to see the front of the room.

Christine Delacroix

Christine will smile and graciously accept his offer. She will make some small talk with Arnie although she has a lot on her mind. At one stage she express some concern about the trio in Chinatown, she will say "Maybe they have stumbled into some opium den run by some unspeakable cult", and then laugh a little at her joke. All in all she is her usual relaxed self.

John Hayward

As everyone in the room appears to be looking at the front of the room John will move into the room somewhat cautiously. As in poke his head around the corner to see the front of the room. After first checking behind to make sure the way out is clear.

James Millhouse

James looks back up and down the corridor. "Looks like we have no choice, boys. We must enter the room. Let's keep our eyes on each other, and be ready in case anything happens." With that, he turns and enters the room.

Dr Turner

Turner creeps into the room after James, prepared to run at all times if something bad occurs.

The three men come inside the room (your sneak rolls have succeeded because of bonuses (chanting, everyone looking away, moving slowly) ^%$#$?@$ !) so you enter the temple. A large number of yellow silk drapes make a dais over the until-then hidden portion of the temple. All the priests seem to be looking at a hole in the ground. From the angle, all you can determine is that the hole seems to be walled with red bricks. These bricks seem covered with somekind of... moisture, similar to morning dew, but... thicker !?

Matt Michaels

Thinking Avery might need help, and having nothing better to do, Matt follows Avery and the others with him towards Chinatown.

Avery leads Matt on a mind-boggling course. As if to elude pursuit.

Dr Turner

Turner does NOT want to risk it. He withdraws back the to the corridor the investigators came out of and motions to the others to do the same.

Before he goes, can he see whether that addict (the one that shouted YA SHOO WAA or whatever) is in the room? Because otherwise, of course, he must be in the pit.

John Hayward

John, being a journo and very curious, will move a bit closer if everyone, evil cultists that is, is distracted by whatever at the front of the room. If he cannot do this safely he will watch from just inside the doorway. He will communicate what he is doing to the other two with hand signals. If the others leave he will reluctantly follow.

James Millhouse

Following John, James tries to get as close a view of the pit as he can, and like John, taking the fact that everyone is distracted into account. And he is just as ready as John to run from the room as quickly as possible, should something happen.

Dr Turner

Turner, his curiosity finally getting the better of him, creeps after John and James. He'll look in the pit with them but will also keep a close eye on the druggies and the cultists. "If we're going to be discovered," he thinks, "I had best make sure we aren't surprised."

Despite the noise and diverted attentions, one of the priests turn towards you, having seemingly heard a noise. "Bi Shu go moo ? Bi shoo tua tu go ?" He asks. Since none of you understand chinese (so you guess), all the others turn towards you. "Bi shu go moo ?" they ask once more.

John Hayward

John decides that being some what out numbered that discretion is the better part of valour and moves towards the door out with a lot of valour. If followed by the cultists he will hightail it out of there.

James Millhouse

James Millhouse steps forward and in a bold voice says to the priests "Bi Shu go moo ! Ying Tong Iddle I Po! Shnayim Sinim Im Kinor Gadol!" Out of the corner of his mouth, he says to the other two quietly "If you can't beat 'em, confuse 'em. Just get ready to run if we need to."

James' scheme works for but a moment, during which the priests look at each other. Then they draw wicked-looking four-spiked knives and rush towards you. In the mad dash that follows, you run outside and bump in three chinese men, taking a few extra steps, you stumble onto Matt. The priests have not erupted from the den. But the three chinese men. One of them is Avery get up. The two chinese men rush towards you while Avery just stands still, as if stunned. He looks at his clothes in wonder.

Dr Turner

Turner yells "SOMEONE, GRAB AVERY!!!" and swings a punch at one of the chinese gentlemen rushing towards him.

Matt Michaels

Matt moves quickly to Avery's side and tries to direct him back the way they just came, all the why asking the others "Would someone please tell me what is going on?"

John Hayward

John grabs Avery's other arm to help Matt carry him off. At the same time he says to Matt "Some chinese guys with wicked four pointed knives "Time to go "

Dr Turner

Once Turner's slowed down one of those two Chinese men who were with Avery by punching them (as described in my previous post) he'll run away with the others.

Taking Avery you rush off. After receiving a severe punch, the other chinese just runs off (down the street). Running somewhat widly for a while, you end up at the Plaza hotel. Just then, you notice James-M is no longer with you !

Arnie will call out to Christine "Miss Christine, the others seem to be in somekind of trouble." He stands up to attract their attention.

Dr Turner

In response to Christine's query, Turner says "Guess what, Christine! We stumbled into some opium den run by some unspeakable cult!" He then explains what's been going on, as briefly as he possibly can without confusing Christine. Concluding, he says "I think someone should stay with Avery, to make sure he's alright and doesn't get into more trouble, whilst the others go and look for James. I was going to do it, but he seems to like you." Leaning over closer, he whispers to her, "It looks like we might be getting into something dangerous with Avery, and he's not telling us everything. Try to get him to tell us more, if only to prevent us from getting hurt through ignorance, and above all try to get him to let us see what's in his document folder. I'd appeal to his sense of national pride - you know, tell him that it's not cricket for an Englishman to keep secrets from his friends when his friends might get in danger, or something."

Being a bit puffed out, what with his low endurance and all, Turner turns to the others and says "I suggest that you fellows look for James - someone had better stay with Arnie and talk to him, make sure he's alright, and that might as well be me."

John Hayward

John will go over to Christine. "Miss Delacroix it would seem that James is in trouble so we are going to try and find him." He is not sure of Arnie's status so he is not saying much more unless asked.

Christine Delacroix

Christine gets up and says "Hey, if you want to be formal it's Miss Delacroix", then she smiles "It's just Christine". Then when she sees the others she says "But yeah, they seem to be in trouble", she then quickly adds "Maybe we should see what's up". After having Arnie pay for the coffee Christine walk out towards the other and say "Hello Sirs, what's up?".

Christine nods silently before she turns to Arnie and says "Look Arnie, I have to go talk to them, in private". After getting a response she goes to see Turner.

Dr Turner

When Christine comes back Turner says "I think you're right to be worried about the cult returning - I was going to suggest having Arnie stay with you, but you know how Avery is cautions of publicity. Hmmm... it seems we have two options. Either we get Arnie to stay with you and leave talking to Avery for later, when he's rested, or - as I have some first aid skill and know more about the cult - it might be an idea for me to stay instead of Avery, if only to dissuade them from attempting to kidnap Avery again and to allow us to question him."

John Hayward

John agrees that someone should stay with Avery be we must hurry to find James before the trail goes cold.

Christine Delacroix

Christine simply says "I think Mr Brown can take care of himself Dr Turner, I told him something came up", she then adds "Though in the interest of my safety I have no problem with you staying with Avery instead while I retire to my room".

Matt Michaels

Matt listens to the tale of the opium den then starts to ask questions when the absence of James is brought to his attention. "I have some skill in the medical arts. I could be helpful if we find Mr. Milhouse to be injured." Looking to see who is staying and who is going he adds "When was he last seen by anyone?"

John Hayward

John stops to think when he hears Matt's question. "Ah Dr Turner did you see James after his performance in the cultist's building? "I don't remember seeing him follow us out. If not I fear he might have been captured and is in mortal danger. "Come on fellows I think we need to get back fast."

"If someone is staying with Avery maybe they could call the police."

John and Turner aren't exactly sure. After his "performance" you all ran like crazy. Matt seems to recall James calling him to take Avery, but because of the general confusion he isn't exactly sure.

Arnie offers meekly "If you are in any kind of trouble, I'm ready to help."

Avery, all the while seems to be trying to sort his thoughts and having some moderate successes with it. He stays nearby and does not say a thing.

James Millhouse

As the priests rushed out, in their pursuit of the his companions, James waited a moment until they were gone, and then climbed out from where he was hiding.

Making sure that they were gone, he went back to the room, in order to take a closer look at the hole in the floor.

Dr Turner

Turner says to Matt "Actually, it was me that shouted out for someone to grab Avery. That settles it - nobody has any clear recollection of James after the cult building. Seeing as Avery could well have had some sort of dose of drugs, I think it might be an idea for Matt to stay - he knows more of medicine than I, and might even be able to identify the drug - it had some curious side-effects not consistent with what I have heard of opium." He then repeats his advice that he gave to Christine to Matt - Avery appears to be holding back, so it might be an idea to try and get him to give up some more information, perhaps by telling him that if he doesn't tell us everything we might get in danger again, and to try and get him to show what's in his document holder.

Christine Delacroix

Christine will tell Arnie (in private) "I think this is private, they would probably not appreciate outsiders". She will then go to talk with Avery, or return to her hotel room, one of those two.

If she gets to talk to Avery she will try to get him something to drink, getting some bootleg brandy should not be too hard. This will be in private, she will give him a snifter of brandy and say "Please Mr Jones, it is medicinal". Whether he drinks it or not she will say "Mr Jones, there has been some terrible things happening, and ... I am put in great danger because of them, now I can understand that you want to protect me, so I need to know what is going on". She looks a bit nervous before she says "Even if you think it is so terrible that I should not be told, how will you feel if horrible accident happens to me because I did not know what was going on?". She smiles at him and awaits his answer.

Matt Michaels

Matt agrees to return with Christine and Avery. Once they are somewhere reasonably safe, Matt will begin to try to determine what is affecting Avery. He will preform tests to the extent of his knowledge as long as Avery is willing, using Christine as a nurse if she is agreeable. He will start the test looking for opiates but will not stop there.

During the tests Matt will ask Avery about the robes he was wearing and the Asian fellows he was with. Matt does not press the questions, just asks in a conversational tone.

John Hayward

John heads off back to the cultists lair. He does not object if Arnie wants to come along as well. He figures some local knowledge will always be helpful.
